I got my foot in the door at RotaGeek by being accepted to a London-based program called the New Entrepreneurs Foundation (NEF).
I knew I didn't want to work in a large corporate, and so leaving Uni I wanted to learn in on the world of startups and SMEs. One of the benefits of NEF was that they helped introduce me to a wide variety of Startups. It was hard at first, mostly because I didn't know what I wanted.
Once I figured out I was passionate about web and mobile products, it became a lot easier to sell myself to high-growth tech companies. In the end, I joined RotaGeek as their first product manager.
A Day In My Shoes
I wouldn't say I have a traditional product management role. About a quarter of my time is spent managing the customer support system for our apps: helping out our users with their issues, reporting on their feedback and suggestions etc.
Alongside this, I help to create and deliver on new product features and improvements. This involves managing our development cycle, while also liasing with the customer success and development teams to make sure we're constantly innovating as best we can for our customers.
What I Love Most
First and foremost, it has to be the people. There are only 12 of us in the office, so it's really important we can all get along to move the company forward. They make my job easy, Being the youngest in the team, I'm given support when I don't know what I'm doing (a lot of the time). It's great to learn from so many passionate people, and it also makes the day-to-day a truly fun experience.
Alongside that, working in a small team means I get a lot of responsibility and autonomy for my age. Basically, stuff needs to be done, and they trust me to do it. So I end up getting exposure to all parts of a high-growth tech business. I came here to learn and grow, and I'm given the chance to do that every single day.
RotaGeek is changing the way large companies manage their workforce. We use our web and mobile apps to help UK's biggest retailers optimise their scheduling; making sure the right people are at the right place at the right time.
We use data-driven analytics to create optimised schedules at the click of a button. Managers use our web app to create, edit and send out shifts to their emloyees. All staff members have access to our mobile app, which gives them direct access to their schedule. We also offer wider HR features within our product such as leave and payroll management.
